Seen here are three examples of warriors utilized by the forces of the Emperor that were superior to Space Marines, the Adeptus Astartes, in some way.
1.) Left is a Thunder Warrior, who would be physically larger, stronger, and tougher than an Astartes, but pays for it with a shortened lifespan and varying degrees of mental instability. These were the warriors the Emperor used to take over Terra during the Unification Wars, and the precursors to the legions.
2.) The center figure is a Raptor of the Raven Guard. Developed by the Raven Guard legion after their horrific casualty rate at the Dropsite Massacre using ancient genetech given to Corax from the Emperor used to create the Primarchs, the Raptors were genetically-superior to the Astartes, and could be used to augment any human male to Legionary status, in a fraction of the time needed for true Astartes. Their gene-seed lab was corrupted by the warp, though, and it led to the Raptors developing debilitating and horrific mutations, though some managed to pull through, and fight the traitors until the end of the Heresy.
3.) On the right is a true "Ultra-marine", a Primaris Space Marine. Developed by Archmagos Dominus Belisarius Cawl before Guilliman was poisoned by Fulgrim during the later stages of the Heresy, Guilliman knew that someday, the Imperium's current forces would not be enough to stem the tide of the Ruinous Powers, and had the Archmagos prepare an army for that emergency. Standard Primaris Marines wear the mark 10 "Tacticus" armor, an amalgamation of all known power armor flaws by combing the best traits of Heresy-era armor and new adaptations such as the gorget and ball-joints of the mark 8 Errant armor. Primaris marines are physically larger, tougher, faster, stronger, and quicker to learn than their Astartes cousins. They also wield new and improved variants of the bolter, plasma gun, and power sword, so far. It is unknown if they have any serious flaws, but are viewed with suspicion to outright hostility from some chapters across the galaxy.
